Be a Cheerful Giver

Trinity Downtown > Blog > Be a Cheerful Giver

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV

Here’s how you can participate:
  • Our congregation has Called Pastor Lonnie Gonzales as Associate Pastor focused on outreach ministries. Please be in prayer that God will guide Pastor Lonnie as he seeks God’s guidance on the next steps in his ministry. Pastor Lonnie plans to attend Sunday’s Oktoberfest, so please introduce yourself to him;
  • Feel free to dress in casual “picnic” or (even better) “Oktoberfest” attire on Sunday so you can attend Oktoberfest, which will be held on the Education Center ball field. Serving starts at 11:30 am;
  • Find out more information about how you can participate in our “Magnify” Sanctuary refresh campaign here. You can record your pledge online here, or fill out a Commitment Card and bring it with you on Sunday, October 23; and
  • Home Treasury pledge forms for 2023 are available here.

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

I filed an extension with the IRS earlier this year, allowing me until October 15th to complete my 2021 tax return. I had the return completed well before the deadline but wound up needing to pay additional income tax for 2021.

Needless to say, I was NOT a cheerful giver! But I suspect the IRS doesn’t much care whether I pay my taxes cheerfully, or not. They just want the money.

Compare the IRS’ stance with what the Apostle Paul writes in the verse quoted above. Jesus apparently cares as much about the attitude we have when we give to Christian ministries as He does about the amount. A spirit of generosity plays an important role in our relationship with Him, and grudgingly gifting money is not what He’s after. He wants our heart, not just our wallet.

This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, we’ll continue discussing how the ancient Corinthians handled a big “distress offering” to the needy church in Jerusalem, and the implications it has on our giving today.

Come learn how placing your doubts, suffering, distractions, hopes, fears, uncertainties in the hands of the Lord can lessen our stress load and bring deep transformation in our hearts. Celebrate with us the depth of Jesus’ love for us and find out how you can live a life of significance, filled with meaning.  Discover how following Jesus can help you and your family navigate around the minefields of life. I promise you it will make a tremendous difference in your life.
