Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. Colossians 1:24 ESV

Suffering. Whenever I hear that word, my mind does NOT automatically think “rejoicing”. Quite the contrary. I associate suffering with pain and will try to AVOID it any way I can. But we all suffer. We suffer from our own foolish decisions or endure the consequences of someone else’s decision. We sometimes voluntarily suffer for our family or friends. And sometimes, suffering literally arrives out of thin air (like hurricanes or COVID).
Jesus warned us about suffering. He tells us in John 16:33 “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” And, of course, Jesus personally suffered terribly at the hands of sinful men.
The existence of suffering drives each of us to ask “why”. What’s the point? Can we find meaning, even amid our own suffering?
Are you going through a period of suffering? Are you whispering “why, Lord?”
This Sunday, we’ll be continuing our summer sermon series focusing on the New Testament book of Colossians. Some of the first century believers in Colossae were apparently being tempted to water down Jesus’ message; to make Him just one of a pantheon of religious thinkers. Paul writes to them to correct this error, and to discuss how he has found the ability to rejoice in his personal suffering.
Come join together with fellow-travelers this Sunday at Trinity Downtown as we continue our study of Colossians. Come learn how placing your suffering, distractions, hopes, fears, uncertainties and doubts in the hands of the Lord can lessen our stress load and bring deep transformation in our hearts. Celebrate with us the depth of Jesus’ love for us and find out how you can live a life of significance, filled with meaning. Discover how following Jesus can help you and your family navigate around the minefields of life. I promise you it will make a tremendous difference in your life.
