On Thursday, SpaceX attempted the first full-scale launch of their Starship rocket, which is rated as the most powerful launch vehicle ever built. Hundreds of SpaceX employees gathered at their facilities throughout the country to cheer on their teammates and watch this momentous occasion. Of course, the event was live-streamed so the world could also participate.
Unfortunately, the Starship didn’t achieve earth orbit, and exploded in what SpaceX calls a “RUD” — a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly — after an exciting launch. Despite the apparent failure, I was amazed at how the employees all continued to cheer like they were at a party. The SpaceX webcast announcer said (with a smile) that she was just pleased that the spacecraft had successfully flown higher than the launch tower! Their focus shifted immediately to the next test flight.
I don’t have to tell you that life is chock-full of ups and downs. If you’re like me, I get up in the morning with my head full of things to do, relationships to build and problems to solve. I go to bed having encountered a blizzard of “RUDs” throughout my day.
The Hebrew Bible records that Joseph, one of the patriarchs of ancient Israel, encountered the same set of problems. His life seemed to swing from great successes to heartbreaking failures. But Joseph persevered simply because he had faith that the Lord’s steadfast love never ceases.
Are you facing similar ups and downs? Is it sometimes difficult for you to see the hand of God after you’ve encountered today’ set of RUD’s in your life?
God invites us to trust that the “ordinary” events of our life will be inexplicably and mysteriously used to hone our personalities into something more pleasing to Him. Have you seen any evidence of that process in your life?
This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, come find a God whose steadfast love helps us to weather the RUDs that come our way. Come worship the God that pursues each of us, even if we didn’t care about a relationship with him. Come hear about Jesus, who suffered, died and rose again to pay the penalty for your sins and open the way for the Holy Spirit to continually whisper to your heart “You know, I really DO love you so deeply that you can’t fully comprehend it.”
This weekend, give Him the opportunity to re-position your heart, redeem your circumstances and deepen your recognition that you are totally dependent upon Him for both your salvation and your very life.
