The Lenten season of repentance and contemplation started this week, taking us on a 40-day journey culminating with Easter. Traditionally, Lent has been seen as a time of sorrow for our individual and collective sinfulness, a time to focus on curbing bad habits or restraining our indulgences. Not necessarily a bad thing.
Perhaps you’ve been pondering what you might “do without” during Lent…all the while, carefully weighing the cost of stopping and the measure of will power it will take to make it happen. That’s the calculation we all make, but I submit it is fundamentally flawed.
Taking that approach assumes that WE have the power to make long-term changes to our behavior. Try harder, grit our teeth, and just hang on long enough so WE can earn some performance points with our Creator.
Deep down, we know that God alone has the power to change our hearts. So I’d suggest that you take a different approach, one aimed at connecting your heart with Him. Ask the Lord for strength to start a new, positive habit that will connect you with HIS power on a daily basis. The new habit must be easy enough that you can do it every day; something like sitting in silence for 1 minute, writing down one thing you’re thankful for, or just reading one Psalm before you go to bed. Invite God into your life, and watch what happens.
On this first weekend of the Lenten season come join with the other sinners at Trinity Downtown as we are reminded of the great cost Jesus paid in showering us with His grace. This weekend, give Him the opportunity to re-position your heart, redeem your circumstances and deepen your recognition that you are totally dependent upon Him for both your salvation and your very life.
