Are you a dog owner? Or maybe you know one. If you ask any dog owner what their pet loves most, they will tell you routine. Dogs prefer to know their standing in the canine pecking order, even if it means they don’t wind up as the alpha dog. They are lightning-quick to ascertain the daily habits of their human masters and find happiness in predictability
God’s Mysterious Plan
And just like mans best friend, humans love certainty, too. We spend inordinate amounts of effort aimed at predicting the future, controlling our circumstances, and trying to ensure that the outcomes of our actions are what we intended. We buy insurance to protect us from the consequences of an automobile accident; we buy medical insurance to smooth-out the expenses we’ll incur for medical care; when we purchase life insurance, we essentially place bets with a life insurance company on how long we will live! A substantial portion of the financial industry exists solely to give us some level of certainty that we won’t find ourselves penniless in our golden years.
We love certainty
Scripture paints a different picture of how God operates. Even though there isn’t a scintilla of uncertainty in His Almighty mind, he’s apparently happy to leave His children with some uncertainty, some mystery. For example, God doesn’t tell us exactly how Christ’s sufferings purchased our redemption. He didn’t tell Job why he suffered. And He often leaves us wondering exactly how events in our lives fit into the big picture.
God is apparently comfortable with mystery
