Then [the Philippian warden] brought [Paul and Silas] out [of their jail cell] and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Acts 16:30 ESV

“Gentlemen, please tell me, what must I do to be liberated?” The Voice paraphrase of Acts 16:30

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

As we’ve been discussing the last several weeks, it’s clear from both Scripture and our own experience that God is much more interested in developing our character than He is concerned for our comfort and convenience.

It seems God takes advantage of the struggles and difficulties in our life to give us the opportunity to change our way of thinking and doing. He does this, of course, because He loves us. He seeks to redeem our mistakes and sins (and the mistakes and sins of others) into transformation of our character.

This Sunday we’ll be celebrating the Ascension of our Lord, which is the ultimate example of God transforming a horrible trauma into something glorious. We’ll also be talking about the famous story in Church history when Paul and Silas were severely beaten and jailed for sharing the Good News in Philippi. God used this injustice to transform the thinking of their jailer. The jailer went from his old way of thinking—I must kill myself before the Roman authorities do it for me—to God’s new way of thinking. The Holy Spirit enlightened the jailer’s heart and brought liberation to him and his entire household.

Are you feeling the prompting of the Holy Spirit to change your thinking? Are there areas of trauma, grief or loss in your life that God is using to transform you? Do you sometimes feel like God has sent you off into unknown territory, kicking and screaming?

If you’re feeling God tugging on your heart, and you need a transformation in your way of thinking, you’re in good company! Come to Trinity Downtown this weekend, where you can hear what Jesus has to say to your heart. Come as we celebrate the power of God to transform our hearts and lives. Come, and invite a friend who might need their faith renewed.
