Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

If you are a science fiction fan, you’ve probably heard of Travelers”, a Canadian television series that tells the story of time travelers from the future who are sent back to the present day. These agents’ mission is to save the world from a series of apocalyptic events that will eventually threaten humankind’s future. The 34 episodes tell an interesting story that is laden with Christian theological references.

One of the ongoing themes of the story arc is that these time agents can never know if their missions is a success. But they are constantly reminded that the intelligence that sent them back to the past is constantly monitoring their activities and quite often intervenes on a moment-by-moment basis to protect and nudge them in the right direction.

All they can do is trust and keep their eyes open!

This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, we’re continuing our reflection on what God has to say to us in the Old Testament story of Joseph, who came from a family that was so messed-up his brothers sold Joseph into Egyptian slavery, and told their father that Joseph was dead.

Looking at the events in his life, Joseph might have concluded that God had forgotten him. But God hadn’t given up on this messed-up family. He chose to work quietly, largely behind the scenes, to restore relationships and provide for Joseph’s family during a severe economic recession. Everything that happened to Joseph, even if it was done with impure or evil motives, was used by God to bring about good. But God’s interventions were often only visible in hindsight.

Joseph’s story reminds us that God is doing His quiet work in our lives all the time; it’s just sometimes hard to detect. So, if you’re going through a hard time, take heart. You can trust that God is patiently working to (re)build relationships with Himself and your family. You can count on it.

This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, come find a God whose steadfast love helps us to weather the emotional ups and downs that come our way. Come consciously place your trust in the God that pursues each of us, even if we didn’t care about a relationship with him. Come hear about Jesus, who suffered, died and rose again to pay the penalty for your sins and open the way for the Holy Spirit to continually whisper to your heart “You know, I really DO love you so deeply that you can’t fully comprehend it.”
