Seeing Beyond Our Own Little Box
Are you ready for today’s vocabulary word? Let’s talk about “ethnocentrism” a little bit. It’s a fancy word thrown about by social scientists to give them “street cred” amongst their peers. Wikipedia’s definition say ethnocentrism is an attitude that leads to the “evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one’s own culture“. Thinking and acting this way seems to be hard-wired into our sinful nature and drives us to strongly prefer the version of reality we share with our parents, friends, co-workers, fellow congregation members and political party.
When it comes to sharing the Gospel, followers of Jesus just don’t have the option of being partial to our own tribe. That’s why Trinity’s mission statement calls for us to share Jesus’ love with ALL people…NOW!
So HOW can we put our mission statement into practice, today? How can we joyfully go about following Jesus? We’ll be exploring this topic together this weekend at Trinity Downtown. We continue offering the opportunity to participate in “drive-up” Communion each Wednesday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. This allows individuals to stay safely in their car while participating in an Order of Confession & Absolution, Communion and Prayer hosted by one of our pastors. If you wish to participate in this worship opportunity on Wednesday July 15th, please reserve your time slot by calling Stephanie at 713.224.0684. She’s available to take your call from 8:30am – 2:15 pm each weekday.
During this time when each of us carries a heavy burden, God has given us the opportunity to hear His Word and demonstrate His love to our family and neighbors. Instead of worrying, let’s cast our cares and worries on the strong shoulders of Jesus.
