Surprised by Joy

Trinity Downtown > Blog > Surprised by Joy

Joy-the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what
one desires. Merriam-Webster dictionary

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his
joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Matthew 13:44 ESV

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

Have you ever been sailing through a “normal” day at work or school, perhaps weighed down a bit of
drudgery or boredom, when you were surprised by something joyful? Perhaps it was a chance meeting
with an old friend, or a phone call from your doctor delivering good news about a recent test result.
Maybe you received an email with a new job offer or found a check in the mail repaying an old debt that
you had forgotten about.

Suddenly, your “normal” day became joyfully abnormal, and the bundle of drudgery or boredom you
were carrying evaporated as if it had never existed. If you’ve experienced something like this, then you
can relate to the joy felt by the guy in Jesus’ story whose life was revolutionized when he stumbled on
some buried treasure. No telling how long that treasure had been buried; for all we know, he might
have been working in that field for years without realizing that riches were literally underneath his
feet.

As we continue this year’s Advent journey, we may be walking along a familiar path, singing familiar
carols and re-reading Scripture passages that we have almost memorized. But perhaps, just perhaps, if
we dig a little deeper this year, we’ll be surprised by some buried treasure that’s just been waiting to
be discovered.

This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, we will be coming together in joyful anticipation for the arrival of Our
Lord, and we’ll each be looking for the hidden treasure that God has for us in this familiar and joyful
journey.

Come home to Trinity this Sunday; come learn how placing your doubts, suffering, distractions, hopes,
fears, uncertainties in the hands of the Lord can lessen our stress load and bring deep transformation in
our hearts. Celebrate with us the depth of Jesus’ love for us and find out how you can live a life of
significance, filled with meaning. Discover how following Jesus can help you and your family navigate
around the minefields of life. I promise you it will make
