I must admit I struggled in my high school chemistry class. I just couldn’t understand how to balance chemical equations, and the Periodic Table of Elements seemed to be devilishly designed to HIDE how the elements were related to one another! I received a “C” on my first report card for that class, and I was afraid it would be a horrible school year.
Then, while slaving over homework one night, everything just seemed to fall into place. I suddenly GOT it! The sequencing of the Elements now made sense, and balancing chemical equations was a snap. The pieces finally fell into place, and while I still had to work hard, the class became a source of joy rather than struggle.
Sometimes that’s the way it works in our relationship with God. We sometimes struggle to understand how to balance God’s expectations with the (seemingly more pressing) needs to build a career, keep the house clean and guide the kids on the right path. Perhaps we don’t understand why God allowed something bad to happen, or why the world is so unfair. Our relationship with God feels like a chore, not a joy.
The ancient children of Israel went down that same road. After King David had painstakingly forged a nation out of twelve (VERY) contentious tribes, their country was invaded and destroyed by the world’s super-power, Babylon. With the Temple destroyed and the people deported over 1,600 miles to Babylon, they waited 70 years for God to miraculously provide the resources to send them back home to Jerusalem.
During that time, they had largely forgotten about the Law that God had revealed to Moses. It took some time before they were ready to re-hear and re-understand the beauty of God’s revelation.
Does your relationship with God feel like a chore, not a source of joy? Are you ready for the pieces to fall into place?
