And going into the house, [the Magi] saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

As 2023 kicks off, how are you feeling? Energized by all the new opportunities the new year brings with it? Focused on your new year’s resolutions to exercise more, work harder (or work less), pray more, eat less, etc? Exasperated by all that’s going on in the world? Fearful that health problems, relationship stresses or financial woes may come to the surface as the year progresses? Tired? Bored? Lonely? Hopeful?
Perhaps you’re feeling bits and pieces of each these emotions as you read this. Mary, Joseph and the Magi mentioned in the Scripture text above probably shared this mishmash of feelings. There was much to praise God for, but many fears stood ready nearby, ready to pounce. Their world was being turned upside down by God’s intervention, but it was still a mess.
In the midst of great joy and great uncertainty, what did Jesus’ parents and the Magi do? They kept going; they ran the race; they kept following the star. Their faith propelled them into action.
Our world is a mess, too. And our job is to keep the faith and allow our God to propel us to constructive action.
This Sunday at Trinity Downtown, we will be coming together in joyful celebration of the arrival of Our Lord, and we’ll each have the opportunity to hear what our part in God’s plan might be. Like the Magi, come worship Jesus this weekend, and see how you can live a life of significance, filled with meaning. Discover how following Jesus can help you and your family navigate around the minefields of life. I promise you it will make a tremendous difference in your life.
