There are an almost infinite number of reasons we pray. Besides expressing our thanks for good health, abundant resources, strong families and forgiveness, we approach God with a repentant heart asking for direction, healing, strength, courage, wisdom (that always a dangerous request!), protection…the list goes on.
Getting the Right Prayers Answered
The Gospels only records a limited number of Jesus’ own prayers verbatim. (John chapter 17 springs to mind.) But we have His Model Prayer, the prayer He taught us to help us understand what we REALLY should be praying for.
The Lord’s Prayer is quite succinct, and spends more time asking God for what HE wants to happen in the world, with much less space reserved for our list of wants. The prayer gives us a pattern on how we should worship God and focuses on requesting that His kingdom become real in our world and our lives. God the Father looms large
What about us? Well, Jesus teaches us we get to ask for what we REALLY need (mainly, giving and receiving forgiveness) as well as protection from the evil that is so prevalent in our world. There’s not much mention of material wealth, perfect health or success as we mere humans define it. Jesus reminds us that the best gift that God can give us is His Holy Spirit. The Lord’s Prayer is all about having more of God in our hearts and in our world.
This weekend at Trinity Downtown, we’ll be continuing our sermon series on Paul’s letter to the Colossian church. We’ll discuss how WE can answer the requests in Jesus’ Model Prayer that we live out our faith. Come celebrate God’s love for us in our contemporary service on Saturday at 5:00 pm, and/or the traditional worship services on Sunday at 8:15 am and 10:50 am.
