Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

Despite our ego’s best efforts, we are not in control of our lives. Oh, we WANT to be in control. Left to our own devices, we’ll almost always choose the path of certainty instead of uncertainty, predictability over surprise, and clarity over mystery. We do our best to nail everything down to be the way we want it to be, playing a game of “whack a mole” with our problems.

But despite our efforts, we are simply not in control. God is still sovereign, and often surprises us. He sometimes redirects our paths away from what is predictable, certain, and easily understood. As many have said before, God is much more interested in developing our character than He is concerned about our comfort and convenience.

The early church experienced this. Both Peter and Paul were called to broaden their horizons to share the Good News with people outside their small social and geographic circles, to Gentiles and women. God even directed them to expand their missionary journeys to cities that one day would be a part of (what we now call) Europe. It wasn’t comfortable to them. It certainly wasn’t convenient.

Yet, God called, and they answered.

Perhaps you’re feeling surprised and dis-comforted today. Has God surprised you? Perhaps a recent doctor visit delivered bad news, your job is driving you crazy, or your teen-ager threatens to go off the beaten path. Do you sometimes feel like God has sent you off into unknown territory, kicking and screaming?

If you’re feeling dis-comforted today, and are facing problems that lie outside your comfort zone, you’re in good company! Come to Trinity Downtown this weekend, where you can hear what Jesus has to say to your heart. Come as we celebrate the power of God to transform our hearts and lives. Come, and invite a friend who might need their faith renewed.
