Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

Funerals happen. We’ve had several unexpected deaths in our church community in just the last few weeks. These deaths, like all deaths, cause us grief and loss, and we mourn with the families. If we think about it for a moment, sometimes as we look at their lifeless bodies, Satan whispers lies in our ears. Did they work hard all their lives for this? Is this really the end? Is this all there really is?

Even Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet, once said to God “But my work seems so useless! I have spent my strength for nothing and to no purpose. (Isaiah 49:4 NLT)  John, one of Jesus’ biographers, tells us that Mary and Martha expressed their dismay to Jesus when their brother Lazarus died.

We grieve, and we sometimes silently wonder. But Scripture is chock-full of stories of real people in real places who witnessed God’s real resurrection power. The same God that created us certainly has the ability to resurrect us. In fact, He’s promised to do just that.

On this fifth Sunday of the Lenten season come join with the other beloved sinners at Trinity Downtown as we come together to worship our gracious God, and put to rest the lie that Satan would whisper that death is the end of our existence. Come join us in a spirit of humility and repentance, and be reminded of how dependent we are on God’s guidance and grace. Recall the great cost Jesus paid in showering that grace upon us, and His promise that death is not the end. This weekend, give Him the opportunity to re-position your heart, redeem your circumstances and deepen your recognition that you are totally dependent upon Him for both your salvation and your very life.
