Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Luke 3:5-6 ESV

Advent devotional booklets for adults and children are available in the Narthex and Gathering Space. Don’t forget to pick up copies for your family!

See what the “buzz” is about—come check out our Contemporary service at 11:15 am each Sunday.

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Downtown:

For as long as I’ve been in Houston (and probably many years before I came to Texas), the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Chorale has performed Handel’s “Messiah” each December. Wikipedia says that Messiah “is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel…It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.” Handel composed this masterpiece in only 24 days, and its text consists entirely of quotes from Scripture.

One of Messiah’s most famous songs (Ev’ry valley shall be exalted”) quotes a prophecy made by Isaiah concerning the return of the children of Israel from captivity in Babylon. It also points to the coming of the Messiah. One of Jesus’ biographers, Luke, includes the same quote and applies it to John the Baptist’s role in “preparing the way” for Jesus’ coming. The Baptist smoothed out His path and provided an introduction, so  Jesus’ message more accessible.

The season of Advent gives each of US the opportunity to participate in the same task undertaken by John the Baptist. WE can prepare our own hearts to receive Jesus’ message. WE can do our part to love our neighbors who are less fortunate (see the “Read more” section). YOU can experience a deeper joy than what our secular world can provide during this hectic time of year.

This Sunday at Trinity Downtown

(December 5th)

You can participate more fully in the joy that Jesus brings by taking advantage of the opportunities to grow, serve and participate. GROW by using our daily Advent devotionals and Advent devotion booklets to deepen your relationship with Jesus. SERVE by donating a gift card to CASA’s “In Search of Treasures” Christmas service project. PARTICIPATE in our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day worship services.

I KNOW it’s a busy time of year, but please don’t neglect worshipping each Sunday. During Advent we’ll discover the different ways Jesus’ arrival is celebrated around the world in our “Christmas Around the World” sermon series. Come see what you can do to get your own heart ready for Him. You can join us in our traditional worship service on Sunday at 9:00 am, or the contemporary service at 11:15 am. Or, you can watch the “live stream” of either service by clicking here. And, of course, you may also participate by watching the “on demand” video of our contemporary or traditional services by clicking here.  You can enhance your worship experience by viewing the traditional service’s worship folder by clicking here. COVID-19 Updates

We continue to be deeply thankful for the God-inspired work of our medical professionals who developed and are distributing the COVID vaccines, and who continue to care for those afflicted with this disease. Please keep the members of our congregation who serve in these capacities in your daily prayers that God may grant them strength, courage and a robust immune system.

Our annual Christmas Eve Pageant is back! Mark your calendars now to attend one of two Christmas Eve services being held at 4:00 pm or 6:00 pm. And our Christmas Day worship service will be held at 9:00 am on Christmas Day. Please note that on the Sundays following Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, we will have one worship service at 9:00 am and our Sunday School and adult Bible studies will take those two Sundays off.

Celebrate with us the depth of Jesus’ love for us and find out how you can live a life of significance, filled with meaning. Discover how following Jesus can help you and your family navigate around the minefields of life.

Come get ready for the arrival of our King at Trinity Downtown this weekend. It will make a tremendous difference in your life.

Your Pastor,

Michael Dorn
