Ahh, summer is here! The kids are out of school, college students are (mostly) back home, and vacations await. It’s a time to relax, recharge and take a break. If we’re fortunate, your vacation might even take you to a cooler climate!
All too quickly, however, summer will end, and it will be back to the grind. Our tasks and studies can’t be put off too long. In fact, they might even have grown while we’re away.
Matthew, one of Jesus’ biographers, tells us about how hard Jesus worked as He journeyed around Palestine. In just a few chapters, Matthew relates how Jesus had healed those suffering from various diseases, raised a young girl back to life, calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee, healed a paralytic, and freed a demon possessed man. After such tremendous “wins”, one could assume Jesus might would have be able to put his feet up and relax a bit.
That was NOT His reaction. Rather, His heart was broken by how much suffering remained to be addressed. His solution was to deputize His disciples with a big task—to go do everything He had done. These disciples came from all walks of life, including common folks and uncommon leaders, the rich and the poor, and the educated and the uneducated, He didn’t hesitate to give them a huge responsibility; they were both called and equipped to follow His example.
This Sunday at Trinity Downtown we’ll see how Jesus is giving each of us the same “To Do” list as He gave the first disciples. We’ll be discussing how Jesus calls us, how He equips us, and how we can keep our eyes open to cooperate with what He’s doing to make a real difference in this world.
